Hap Ki Do

Hap Ki Do is a Korean martial art that uses joint locks, escapes and take downs as a means of self protection. We offer Hap Ki Do to anyone 14 years of age and older. Hap Ki Do is extremely effective for self defense because it does not rely on the practitioners size or strength instead it is the technique that makes the Hap Ki Do effective.

The instructor emphasizes the use of the Three Principles of Hap Ki Do: Nonresistance, Circular Motion and the Water Principle.

Nonresistance encompasses the idea of using your opponent's size and strength against them. Rather than resisting them the Hap Ki Do practitioner flows with the attacker.

Circular Motion allows the student to develop power through momentum rather than physical strength.

The Water Principle is the idea of flowing around your opponent rather than trying to go through your opponent, just as water will flow around a boulder in it's path rather than trying to move the boulder.

The Hap Ki Do Introductory Course is designed to teach the beginning student the basic physical and mental aspects of Hap Ki Do. The course consists of 2 classes where the basic techniques are introduced along with the Three Principles of Hap Ki Do. Upon completion of the Introductory Course the student will have a good idea of what Hap Ki Do is really about and will also be ready to join class.

Master Jill Hegland has been teaching Hap Ki Do since 1986. Receiving her black belt in 1984, she became the first female black belt in the ISU HKD program. She has given numerous self defense seminars in the community. Her Hap Ki Do classes have grown in popularity because it offers an activity that challenges each person to be their personal best both physically and mentally while developing practical self defense skills.
